Daily Chat: Cut, Cleared & Torn

CUT
The team cut wide receiver Marko Mitchell and offensive tackle Bill Noethlich to get down to 75. Taye Biddle must really shine in practice.

CLEARED
Linebacker J. Leman cleared waivers after the Vikes cut him Monday, meaning he can be stashed on the injured reserve list for the season or the team and reach an injury settlement with him and release him.

Leman missed most of training camp because of a turf toe injury, which sucks.

TORN
Rookie cornerback Chris Cook suffered a meniscus tear during the game against the Seahawks.

The Mayo Clinic says:

A torn meniscus is an injury to one or more of the two C-shaped pieces of cartilage in each of your knee joints.

Any activity that causes you to forcefully twist or rotate your knee, especially when putting the pressure of your full weight on it, can lead to a torn meniscus.

Conservative treatment — such as rest, ice and medication — is sometimes enough to relieve the pain of a torn meniscus and give the injury time to heal on its own. In other cases, however, a torn meniscus requires surgical repair.

The Star Tribune’s Judd Zulgad reports that Cook had “a procedure,” presumably the surgical repair of which the Mayo speaks.

Cook is expected to miss at least two weeks. It had looked like Cook had that starting right corner spot locked up, which means it’s probably between Lito Sheppard and Asher Allen now. Let’s see how much time they get Thursday night.

Don’t be surprised if the Vikings pick up a corner or two off the waiver wire.

Is Benny Sapp going to make the Dolphins roster??

PUP
Pup is an entirely appropriate term, given his judgment of whether/when to have surgery on his hip.

Sidney Rice, as expected, was placed on the inactive/Physically Unable to Perform list. Here’s what Wikiepdia says about the rules, as it pertains to Rice:

A player who begins the regular season on the PUP list must sit out his team’s first six games. After that point, a team has three weeks to start having the player practice; once the player begins practicing, the team has another three weeks to put the player on the active roster.

The sixth game is during week seven (the Vikings have a bye at week four) against Green Bay. The following week we play at New England. As I read the rules, then, the earliest Sidney could return would be that week to play the Patriots. He sits out the sixth game against the Packers, the Vikings immediately determine he can practice and once he does so, they put him on the active roster.

The latest Rice can play (and again, I”d like to point out that I’m not a Professional NFL PUP Rules Analyst) would be

He starts practicing in week ten, when we play Chicago, and the Vikings activate him on the Saturday of  week 13, meaning he would be active for that game against Buffalo.

Am I reading this correctly?

Do we have any Professional NFL PUP Rules Analysts out there?

HAPPY BIRTHDAY
Happy Birthday to Sidney Rice (24).
